REPUBLIC SQUARE

This square, so called after the implantation of the Republic, was previously known as Praça D. Luís I and Praça Nova, as opposed to Praça Velha, located in the castle area, where the old town hall building stood.

Its rectangular shape is reminiscent of the typical Castilian squares and is one of the few examples of this type of public space in Portugal.
