REPUBLIC SQUARE

This square, named after the implantation of the Republic, was formerly known as Praça de D. Luís I and Praça Nova as opposed to Praça Velha, where the City Hall was located when the tremendous catastrophe of September 16, 1732 that destroyed much of from the castle and practically the whole village, causing 256 deaths and more than two thousand injured people, all of this motivated by a tremendous thunderstorm with the explosion of the powder storehouse.
