Located in the highest part, south of the village, the Castle of Campo Maior offers to the visitor a privileged perspective of the village and the surrounding landscape.
The castle of Campo Maior, with an eventual Islamic foundation, was rebuilt in the reign of D. Dinis, having remained practically unchanged until the 15th / 16th centuries. At this time, in the reigns of D. João II and D. Manuel, the castle underwent major changes due to the expansion and remodeling works.
The wall that encircled the village in the first years of the 16th century started next to the castle and extended until the Door of Santa Maria, now called Door of the Village.
Note: The visit to Campo Maior Castle is made in the context of the visit to the Interpretative Centre of the Fortification.
